Burnout From The Lens of a Female Entrepreneur & Corporate Counsellor
INTRODUCTION
In this episode, we’re honoured to host Mandy Dececco Kolebaba, a dynamic mom, entrepreneur, HR expert, and a key figure in our local community. With a diverse educational background and a passion for supporting women in business, Mandy brings a wealth of wisdom and experience to the discussion.
In this episode, Mandy shares her personal journey with us, highlighting a pivotal moment that led to her experience with burnout. The term "burnout" may be sensationalized, but Mandy stresses the importance of understanding its profound effects beyond conventional self-care measures.
CHALLENGING SOCIETAL NORMS
We live in a society that equates success with overcoming significant obstacles. It’s not enough to simply be successful, we now have to have an origin story of something significant or tragic that we have overcome. That’s a disservice we do to each other. It’s not true that whoever overcomes the most obstacles has won. We need to approach life from a different perspective. You can be smart, capable, and work hard, and that should be enough.
BUILDING NEW SYSTEMS
Why is it that the people who often make it hardest on us are other women? It's time to make a change from the outside in – build new systems outside of the old ones, because we can’t fix the old ones. We need new systems. Mandy states that it’s imperative we recognize that someone else getting what they need does not take away from us getting what we need.
STRATEGIES FOR WELL-BEING
How many of the expectations we are striving to reach did we set for ourselves? Mandy shares of how she struggled with the idea of taking time off because she worried her clients would feel she was slacking off, when in reality, her clients were supportive of her taking a vacation. Whether you love your job or hate it, there is so much more to life than work.
CONCLUSION
Burnout is not something that we should strive for, nor is it a badge of honour. It is so much more than simply feeling tired or stressed. It is actually a state of chronic physical and emotional exhaustion. You often feel like you can’t physically bring yourself to do that thing for one more minute. There is something physically happening inside our bodies when burnout is taking place. It is very complex, and I don’t want this community to be about sensationalizing burnout – I want to get to the seriousness of what burnout is, share stories so we feel seen and heard, and less alone in our journeys.
If you find yourself wishing that you would get in a minor accident, or something would happen to you so you could have a little time off work, you need to take some time to understand what’s causing that. There are professionals that can help you – professionals like Mandy - and we recommend you find one as your first step.
You don’t have to live this way; you can find freedom from burnout. You can live your life lit! 🔥
